The Bridge is an interview series about Legacy, Leverage and Intergenerational Leadership. This series is brought to you by Bridge to Significance Pte Ltd.

In an era where consumer wellness brands relentlessly chase shelf space, low margins, and aggressive retail distribution, Suryakenchana Omar is forging a strikingly different path.

By pairing traditional cultural heritage with rigid corporate governance principles, he has transformed the centuries-old art of Jamu into a scalable educational platform.

In a feature interview with Venture Post, Surya unpacked the strategic operational blueprint behind his unique enterprise—explaining how disciplined structure, academic credibility, and a steadfast focus on knowledge transmission allowed him to build a sustainable business without competing in saturated consumer markets.

The Governance Blueprint

Surya’s focus on business structure and operational control is no accident.

His leadership journey began at the age of 18, when he was thrust into managing a family company.

That early immersion in business operations taught him a fundamental lesson: passion and cultural authenticity cannot survive without rigorous governance.

To establish autonomy over her professional trajectory, Surya transitioned to full self-employment in 2011, establishing his own independent Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational milestones.

Rather than navigating the unpredictable month-to-month fluctuations common in solo entrepreneurship, he developed a strategic two-cycle annual work plan.

Under this framework, his financial goals and operational commitments are structured to secure full income coverage for consecutive six-month periods.

This predictable runway provides him with total independence, enabling strategic decision-making free from immediate financial pressures.

The Jamu Business Model: Education Over Competition

When Surya turned his expertise toward Jamu—the traditional Southeast Asian practice of herbal remedies utilizing natural ingredients like turmeric and tamarind for anti-inflammatory and pain-relief benefits—he identified a major flaw in the standard business model.

Most founders rush to bottle products and battle for retail shelf space, facing high overheads and razor-thin margins.

Surya took a radically different approach: he focused his Jamu ventures exclusively on education, workshops, and awareness building.

By steering clear of direct retail competition, he positioned his brand around high-value knowledge rather than mass commodities.

The strategy yielded remarkable results.

As market appreciation for authentic wellness heritage grew, Surya was able to increase his workshop pricing four- to five-fold since the project’s inception. To maintain clear organizational boundaries and protect his focus on curriculum delivery, he delegated physical product sales to his daughter.

This allowed Surya to concentrate entirely on knowledge transmission and workshop expansion.

Academic Credibility and Global Reach

Underpinning Surya’s entrepreneurial success is an impressive academic foundation.

Holding a Master’s degree in Southeast Asian Studies, he applies scholarly rigor to structure his heritage-based programs, ensuring that his teachings are historically grounded and culturally authentic.

His intellectual integrity was on full display in 2024 when he made the decision to discontinue his PhD studies after discovering alignment conflicts with her previous research findings.

Rather than pursuing a title that no longer fit his framework, he chose clarity and authenticity.

His academic positioning has also unlocked global opportunities. Through NUS' Distinguished Senior Fellowship Programme (DSFP), Surya has expanded his Jamu wellness concepts internationally, leading heritage and wellness initiatives in markets across Southeast Asia, including a prospective project in Cambodia.

A Legacy of Simplified Wisdom

At his core, Surya views his professional identity as a facilitative educator dedicated to simplifying complex traditions for modern audiences.

By translating intricate herbal remedies into structured, actionable learning experiences, he bridges ancient wisdom and contemporary lifestyle needs.

Ultimately, his ambition reaches beyond revenue metrics and workshop expansions.

Guided by a core personal belief system, Surya’s primary goal is to leave behind a lasting legacy of beneficial knowledge—ensuring that traditional heritage remains alive, respected, and accessible for generations to come.
